Stop Smoking with Chantix / Champix

Varenicline tartrate by Pfizer

CHANTIX is an FDA approved prescription medicine to help adults stop smoking. It is marketed in Europe under the name CHAMPIX.

Varenicline Tartrate Description

Chemical name: 7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-6,10-methano-6H-pyrazino[2,3- h][3]benzazepine, (2R,3R)-2,3-dihydroxybutanedioate (1:1).

Varenicline Tartrate (also known as Vareniclin, Vareniclina and Vareniclinum) is a smoking cessation aid which acts as an alpha-4 beta-2 nicotine receptor partial agonist. Varenicline binds at the alpha-4 beta-2 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and produces agonist activity, while simultaneously preventing nicotine binding to these receptors.

Since Varenicline Tartrate blocks the ability of nicotine to activate these receptors, it prevents nicotine from stimulating the central nervous mesolimbic dopamine system, believed to be the neuronal mechanism underlying reinforcement and reward (resulting in addiction) experienced upon smoking.
